Local Transport--In Tibet Local Transport--in Tibet includes: Bus,Pedicab, Autorickshaw,Tractor and Taxi. Bus Minibuses ply the streets of Lhasa and Shigatse these days, and it is possible to travel quickly from one end of town to the other. Pedicab Pedicabs(pedal-operated tricycles that taek passengers which you can see a lot in the small town in China)are available in Lhasa,Gyantse, Shigatse and Bayi. They are a slow and expensive way to get around. For example , in Lhasa it costs a minimum of Y10 to go from one end of town to the other and it is a much more time-consuming process than travelling by minibus. Autorickshaw A couple of towns in eastern Tibet, such as Pomi and Bayi, have motorised three wheeler rickshaws that take passengers around town or to destinations(eg.monasteries)just outside of town. Negotiate the fare before you set off. Tractor In Shigatse, tractors serve as the town's public transport system and rides cost around Y2 or Y3. elsewhere in Tibet the tractor can be a good option for short trips, especially in the Yarlung Valley. For few yuan, drivers are normaly quite hapy to have some passengers in the back. Rides of anything over 10 minutes quickly become excruciatingly painful. Taxi There is a large number of taxis now available in most towns in Tibet, even Ali in western Tibet. Taxis in Lhasa, Shigatse and Ali charge a standard Y10 anywhere in the city; for longer trips negotiate a fare. Fixed-route passenger taxis also run between Lhasa, Gongkar airport and Tsetang and you only need to pay for your seat.
Local transport is only available in Lhasa and Shigatse. In some parts of Tibet it is possible to get short lifts with tractors. |
